The Gardens at Mara Ponds

The Gardens at Mara Ponds are a tranquil private garden of two acres provided exclusively for guests at the Cottage and the Overflow.

If you wish to see or use the gardens and are not a guest; please contact Michelle to discuss possible arrangements. Due to the ponds and wildlife the gardens are not suitable for pets and small children.

The original buildings on the property were replaced by the mud brick buildings which were built in the 70s as part of a community of two beards and a bra. In 1980 the Mara Ponds Gardens were established by the Beggs family and they became a local attraction. Unfortunately Mara Ponds was sold and subdivided with the dam removed from the main property and the gardens let to run wild with neglect.

The gardens are popular with visitors and you may see platypus, wallabies, echidnas, wombats, kookaburras, fairy wrens, robins, tasmanian wattle birds, ravens currawongs, magpies, spinebills native hens and fan-tails.

There is a huge flock of yellow tailed black cockatoos that may invade in late afternoons. Their cries transforming as they settle to roost in the towering white gums that frame the vista.

You may even see a pair of wedge-tailed eagles soaring overhead.

Michelle bought the property in 2021 and is restoring the gardens as well as establishing an orchard with the bumbling assistance of Tad and the bees.

Michelle would welcome any gardening advice and assistance, and consider providing free accommodation to support working holidays by suitably qualified persons. Please feel free to contact her to discuss.
